Santa Marta is one of Colombia’s most popular tourist destinations, and there are a LOT of hotels and hostels to choose from (get this: in Rodadero alone, there are over 1,100 hotels).

When it comes to destinations like Colombia, choosing the right place to stay will make or break your trip.

Despite being a beach town, parts of Santa Marta are chaotic (to say the least). There are certain parts of the city you definitely want to avoid. Before you book a hotel, there are a few important things you must know.

In this guide, we’ll cover:

  • Where you should stay based on your travel style (beach bum vs. party-the-night-away type vs. nature lover),

  • The exact 8 hotels I recommend in and near Santa Marta,

  • The pros and cons of staying in Taganga during your trip,

  • Areas to avoid to stay safe and have a fantastic vacation.

After living in Colombia for more than two years and finding hotels for friends and family (and staying in multiple hotels myself), these are my top recommendations.
